The Scott Polar Research Institute was founded in 1920, in Cambridge, as a memorial to Captain Robert Falcon Scott, RN, and his four companions, who died returning from the South Pole in 1912. (William) Launcelot Scott Fleming was born on 7 August 1906 at Edinburgh. He was educated at Rugby School and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, graduating with a degree in natural sciences before completing a master's degree in geology at Yale University.
